Q Can I put a wind turbine on my roof?
A Possibly, subject to planning permission and adequacy of the roof structure. However, a wind turbine will operate more efficiently on a separate mast, and there are more cost-effective ways to promote renewable energy. [CAT]

If you intend to change the appearance of your property, for example by installing solar panels, a turbine, external insulation, or double glazing you may need to apply to the local planning authority (Canterbury CC) for planning permission. If your property is in the Bridge Conservation Area you may, in addition, need to apply to the local planning authority (Canterbury CC) for permission under the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990. Q Is it practicable to put solar panels on the roof?
A For most people, solar water heating is the most economic and practical way to use renewable energy at home (apart from buying renewable electricity and using renewable heating systems) and it can provide 50 to 60 per cent of your hot water over the year. Photovoltaic solar panels can be expensive compared to mains electricity. The government has introduced a grant to offset some of the cost. See note above regarding permissions. [CAT]
 
Q Is it worth fitting low energy light bulbs?
A Yes - definitely. Low energy light bulbs are probably the easiest way to save energy in the home. If every UK household installed just two low energy lights, it would save the electricity produced by one power station. [CAT]
 
Q I understand that all new central heating boilers must be 'condensing' boilers. Is this correct?
A All new boilers must have an efficiency rating of A or B, and at the moment only condensing boilers achieve this. Early condensing boilers had reliability problems, but modern units have overcome these and they are now the most effective option. [CAT]
 
Q What is the best type of insulation to use?
A It will depend on the situation. By and large, for lofts we recommend cellulose fibre, made from recycled fireproofed newsprint. Another environmentally-friendly option is Sheep's Wool. [CAT]
 
Q What if I change to commuting by bike?
A Transport is a major cause of CO2 emissions in the UK. Many of our car journeys are over short distances that could be covered by bicycle without working up too much of a sweat. In 2005, nearly 70% of all car journeys were less than five miles long. Every time you take your bike instead of the car for, say, a three-mile commute to work, you avoid around 2 kg of CO2 emissions. So, even if you only cycle in nice weather, you can make a difference [EST]
 
Q What if I cut down eating meat?
A A lot of land, water, fertilizer and energy are used for producing feed crops for animals. Ruminants, such as cows, also produce large amounts of methane, a very strong greenhouse gas. So, go for a low meat diet of delicious fresh local vegetables. [EST]
 
Q What if I cut down on flying?
A Unfortunately, going by plane is very environmentally damaging, but there are other options. Trains, coaches and boats are a lot more sustainable and offer low-carbon ways to get to wild and wonderful places throughout Europe. If you do fly, consider doing a Carbon Offset to reduce the damage of your flight
 
Q Can I fit double-glazing to a listed building?
A Yes, subject to receipt of permission from the local planning authority (see 1 above). [EH]
