Following the results of the Parish Plan and a Housing Needs Survey, Bridge Parish Council has been working on a project to build affordable housing in the village.

A plan had been proposed (but not yet submitted for planning permission) by Southern Housing Association to build a scheme on the Brickfields site at the end of Western Avenue. The proposal is for four one-bedroom flats, two two-bedroom houses and two three-bedroom houses.

Because the site is outside the village envelope, it is what is known as an "exception site". This means very strict conditions are placed on who can live there. The Parish Council is putting forward a set of criteria which will ensure the housing is for local people. Apart from having a housing need, applicants will have to meet the criteria set down. These criteria are enshrined in a "Section 106" agreement. This is legally binding on the site. The essence of the criteria is:

  1. has lived in Bridge for at least ten years (whether or not he or she is living there at the date of application); or

  2. was previously resident in Bridge for ten years but satisfies the Trust that he or she moved elsewhere principally to secure affordable and appropriate accommodation due to there being no such accommodation in Bridge at that time; or

  3. is the mother or father or son or daughter of a person who has lived in Bridge for at least ten years and is still living there
If no-one meets any of those criteria, then the same is extended to Bishopsbourne, Patrixbourne, Kingston or Bekesbourne.

If no-one meets any of those, the Bridge criteria are reduced to 5 years

If no-one meets any of those, the 5 years criterion is extended to Bishopsbourne, Patrixbourne, Kingston or Bekesbourne.

If no-one meets any of those, then the housing is offered to those who is a close relative who is giving care or support to a family member resident in Bridge

Finally, if none of those criteria are met, the house is offered to anyone on the City Council's waiting list.

A local waiting list will be maintained to ensure that when a dwelling becomes available, a local person with need can move in as quickly as possible.

The site layout proposed is this:

This plan is available in much more detailed format to download in PDF format, but please note it is a very large file (3.2MB)

The internal layout of the units may be something like this, but this plan is only indicative, as there are likely to be amendements in order to meet some of the Housing Corporation's minimum standards in terms of room layout and size.

This plan too is available in much more detailed format to download in PDF format, and is not quite as large as the site plan file (739KB)
