We were delighted that so many members brought their Chairman’s Challenge buckets of potatoes along to the Recreation Ground in Patrixbourne Road for weighing on the morning of Saturday 25 July. There were 16 entries and the weight of potatoes they contained ranged from an impressive 1kg 095g down to 55g. Julia Cooper was the clear winner of the Whitten Spencer Chairman’s Challenge Cup.
John Newell kindly agreed to judge the photograph class which had an encouraging 8 entries. The winner of the trophy for Best Photograph in Show was Rajini Dasan who also received a voucher. Second was Jackie Thackray and third, Kathy Walder. John commented that they were a wonderful set of lovely images which people had clearly taken the time to compose and meet the subject title. He added that all the entrants should be congratulated on the quality of the pictures and the thought that went into taking them.
Peter Aplin judged the other three classes. Peter Ellis won the “Vegetable or Fruit Oddity”, whilst the vase of mixed flowers class was won by Jill Gillanders, second was Julia Cooper and third Jackie Thackray. Julia Cooper’s arrangement entitled “Roots, Shoots and Leaves” was a deserving first, followed by that of Rajini Dasan, with Jackie Thackray’s in third place. The winners in each class received vouchers. In total there were 13 entries.
The Society were so pleased to be able to organise at least a semblance of a show and perhaps even provide the highlight of the village’s social summer calendar! A big thank you to everyone who took part.
